When to book
Fares on this route track the Maldivian season closely. The dry season from December to April is peak: expect $1,100–$1,400 return, and book at least four months out for Christmas and New Year. The wet season from May to November is where the $699 fares live, and the rain is usually short afternoon squalls rather than washed-out days.
The booking sweet spot is roughly 8 to 11 weeks before departure. Earlier than that and carriers have not yet released discounted buckets; later and the discounted inventory is gone.
Choosing a connection
Emirates via Dubai is the workhorse — six daily JFK departures and a short, well-timed MLE connection. Qatar via Doha is usually the better cabin for a small premium. Turkish via Istanbul is frequently the lowest fare on the page but adds a long layover and a second night in transit.
Avoid routings with a connection under 90 minutes at DXB or DOH. Both are large airports, and a missed onward sector to Malé can cost you a full day, since the MLE flights are not frequent.
Arriving at Velana
Almost every resort transfer — seaplane or speedboat — is booked through the resort, not the airline, and seaplanes do not operate after dark. If your flight lands after about 15:30 you will likely overnight in Malé or Hulhumalé at your own cost. Aim for a morning arrival, which the Gulf carriers make easy.
